Dr. Anders Cohen Champions Minimally-Invasive Methods for Spinal Disorders

Dr. Anders Cohen attained worldwide renown for his contributions to the field of spine surgery, particularly his work using minimally-invasive techniques. Compared to traditional open surgery, minimally-invasive methods result in less pain, less risk, and faster recuperation rate for patients.

At present, he is the chief of the Neurosurgery Department at the Brooklyn Hospital Center and is affiliated with the St. Barnabas Hospital in New York. In these facilities, he advanced minimally-invasive surgical techniques, pioneering the eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF) and the Axial Lumbar Interbody Fusion (AxiaLIF) techniques for spinal problems. He was the first surgeon in the New York metropolitan area to successfully perform these delicate procedures.

He explains that his advocacy of minimally-invasive methods comes from the knowledge of their advantages over traditional, open surgery techniques. After years of extensive study, it has become established that minimally-invasive procedures result in less tissue and muscle trauma, less pain and discomfort, less post-operative complications and a faster recuperation rate among patients.

Dr. Anders Cohen earned his medical degree from the prestigious New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. After completing a fellowship in pediatric surgery, Dr. Cohen now treats both adult and pediatric patients diagnosed with brain and spinal disorders. He later became assistant professor at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, one of the finest medical schools in the country. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Voices Against Brain Cancer, an organization dedicated to the research, study and treatment of brain cancer.
